Re: K12 Inc Gets Virtual Charter in Utah
by

To assure proper use of taxpayer funds, I think it is imperative that school districts maintain stellar accountability with regard to how the for-profts who are providing them services, such as K12, Inc. spend the state funding. K12, Inc. has boasted significant profits in the past several years and it is my concern that these profits represent money that could have been used to directly benefit the students of the district.
A solution? The one suggested by Utah Superintendent Patti Harrington and Janet Cannon, Vice President of the School Board at the Utah Board of Education.
Superintendent Patti Harrington said the state is likely to open its own K-8 virtual school, leading some board members to wonder why the state should approve the more expensive Utah Virtual Academy..... “My preference would be to wait and let our state office come through with their K-8 [virtual school], and I think that would mitigate the need for this,” said Janet Cannon, board vice chairman. “I don't know this is a wise use of public funds.”
Now that there are numerous providers of online education services such as comprehensive online curriculum catalgues and extensive online learning software tool, I believe it is much more fiscally responsible for the school district should develop its own virtual school offerings.
Wouldn't you rather see the districts putting the extra money to use for the children they serve as opposed to lining the pockets of a corporation like K12, Inc. that is making millions off of the nation's taxpayers.
